(SUBURBAN REALITIES AND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS: A NEW READING OF PREMCHAND'S STORIES)

Abstract

This paper offers a contemporary re-reading of Munshi Premchand’s short stories through the lens of suburban transformation and evolving social consciousness. Traditionally recognized for his rural realism, Premchand's narratives also anticipate the shift toward semi-urban and transitional spaces—zones caught between tradition and modernity. This study reinterprets selected stories to highlight how emerging class structures, caste dynamics, gender roles, and economic marginalization play out in liminal, suburban-like settings. These narratives provide a deeper understanding of socio-political transitions in pre-independence India, which resonate strongly with today’s semi-urban realities. By using interdisciplinary tools from literary criticism, sociology, and urban studies, the paper seeks to unravel how Premchand’s characters embody conflict, resistance, and aspiration within socially stratified environments. This modern reading positions Premchand not only as a chronicler of village life but also as a precursor to India’s suburban literary imagination.
