Abstract

This study undertakes a comparative evaluation of traditional and contemporary residential structures in Lahore, Pakistan, challenging the prevailing assumption that architectural modernity necessitates a complete departure from vernacular ecological intelligence. The study employs a mixed-methodology approach, integrating instrumented field measurements with qualitative socio-cultural analysis to evaluate environmental performance, material systems, and cultural resonance across two paradigmatic case studies: a preserved early-20th century bungalow and a recently constructed suburban house.

Key findings reveal a substantial performance divergence. The traditional archetype demonstrates effective passive thermal regulation through high-mass construction and calibrated natural ventilation, maintaining indoor temperatures within a comfortable range for significant periods without mechanical intervention. In contrast, the contemporary model exhibits pronounced thermal instability, with indoor conditions closely tracking external extremes, resulting in substantial dependency on active HVAC systems and correspondingly higher operational energy expenditure.

The analysis concludes that Lahore's architectural heritage embodies not merely historical aesthetic value but a sophisticated, place-specific bioclimatic logic, a "bioclimatic codex" of empirically tested principles for environmental modulation. This research proposes a framework for architectural synthesis that critically translates this vernacular intelligence into contemporary practice through three strategic pathways: composite material assemblies, reconceived spatial organizations, and transformative regulatory mechanisms. The paper concludes with actionable recommendations for policymakers, educators, and practitioners to foster a culturally grounded and environmentally responsive architectural modernism in Pakistan's urban development.
