TO EXPLORE THE GEOSTRATEGIC SIGNIFICANCE OF GWADAR PORT WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF CHINA’S BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE

Abstract

This study examines the geostrategic significance of Gwadar Port within the China’s Belt and Road Initiative framework and its role in the economic integration, regional connectivity and geopolitical subtleties. Gwadar port located at the intersections of the Middle East, Central Asia and the South Asia lodges an essential for global energetic supply maritime route. A qualitative research approach was adopted for this study, drawing on case study, documentary analysis and secondary literature to assess the strategic importance of Gwadar for both China and Pakistan. The findings indicate that the Gwadar Port supports as a serious nautical hub that improves China’s access to the energy resources of Middle East whereas provides Pakistan with chances to expand its trade routes and to decrease dependences on traditional ports. This port also reinforces the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor by connecting domestic substructure projects with global markets, thus putting Pakistan as a possible regional trade gateway. Though, the study also classifies important challenges, including security threats, political instability and regional competitions, which may delay the full understanding of Gwadar’s potential. The study concludes that the Gwadar Port is not only an economic strength but also a strategic tool that redesigns regional power subtleties under the BRI. Its achievement depends on the active governance, maintainable development strategies and the cooperative engagement among the stakeholders of region. By emphasizing both the opportunities and challenges, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the developing role of Gwadar in the global trade and geopolitics.
