Abstract

In this research article we will examine how images used in political cartoons shared on social media and digital media convey political ideology through the use of semiotics. Using Barthes' model of semiotic analysis from 1957, we will look at how different visual signs, captions, caricatures, spatial relationships, and objects are used to create denotatives, connotative, and mythic meanings. The cartoons that were selected for analysis addressed key ideological issues in the political discourse of Pakistan, including elections and their impact upon society, economic crisis and dependence on the International Monetary Fund (IMF), coalition politics, terrorism, relationships between civil and military authorities, corruption, democratic reforms, struggles for leadership, and conflict with India. The analysis has revealed that the way in which the political events depicted in the cartoons are depicted and communicated by the cartoons is not simply communicated; rather, when portrayed in a humorous, satirical, exaggerated manner, or through the use of irony and visual metaphor, the events become compressed into ideologically charged narratives. In examining how the relationship between signifiers and signifieds makes the power, accountability, nationalism, governance, and public distrust visible to the audience, the analysis reveals how power is accessed through the use of semiotic codes when individuals share meaning with one another. The study also argues that the dynamic relationship between cartoonists and audiences represents a semiotic process whereby political meaning is constructed and negotiated through use of shared cultural codes and intertextual references. In conclusion, this research identifies political cartoons as persuasive visual texts contributing to the shaping of public opinion and sociopolitical discourse within Pakistan.
