Abstract

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has transformed educational practices worldwide, creating unprecedented opportunities for enhancing teaching effectiveness and professional competence. Within English as a Second Language (ESL) education, Artificial Intelligence Teacher Assistants (AI-TAs) have emerged as intelligent pedagogical partners capable of supporting lesson planning, instructional material development, classroom assessment, personalized feedback, differentiated instruction, and teacher professional development. Despite the growing adoption of AI-powered educational tools, existing research remains fragmented, largely emphasizing technology acceptance or technological capability while paying comparatively limited attention to how AI-TAs contribute to the development of teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), particularly within developing educational contexts such as Pakistan. Addressing this conceptual gap, the present study proposes the Artificial Intelligence Teacher Assistant-Powered Pedagogical Proficiency (AI-TAPP) Model, an integrated conceptual framework that positions AI-TAs as catalysts for enhancing ESL teachers' pedagogical competence and instructional effectiveness. Drawing upon an extensive review of contemporary literature on artificial intelligence in education, TPACK, AI-enhanced pedagogy, technology acceptance, English language teaching, and teacher professional development, the study synthesizes diverse theoretical and empirical perspectives to develop a comprehensive framework explaining the pedagogical mechanisms through which AI-TAs support teacher learning and classroom innovation. The proposed model conceptualizes AI-TAs as multifunctional instructional partners that enhance teachers' professional knowledge by facilitating lesson design, adaptive instruction, formative assessment, learner feedback, classroom communication, and scholarly engagement. The framework further demonstrates how continuous interaction with AI-TAs strengthens teachers' TPACK domains, leading to improved instructional quality, learner engagement, personalized learning, assessment practices, and sustainable professional growth. Furthermore, the study identifies freely available AI-TAs suitable for various ESL pedagogical functions and discusses their practical applicability within the Pakistani educational context. The proposed AI-TAPP Model extends existing scholarship by shifting attention from technology adoption toward technology-enabled pedagogical transformation, thereby offering a contextually relevant framework for future empirical validation, teacher education programs, institutional AI integration strategies, and educational policy development. The study contributes to the growing discourse on AI-supported language education by providing a comprehensive conceptual foundation for responsible, effective, and sustainable integration of Artificial Intelligence Teacher Assistants into ESL teaching and learning.
