IMPACT OF SMART TECHNOLOGIES ON STUDENT LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF SMART PEDAGOGIES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES OF BALOCHISTAN

Abstract

The rapid integration of Smart Technologies has changed the way learning and teaching practices in higher education are conducted. Empirical evidence on how the technologies are improving student learning is limited mostly to developing countries. This study analyses the impact of Smart Technologies on Student Learning and investigates the mediating role of Smart Pedagogies in public sector universities of Balochistan. Using a quantitative, explanatory design, data were collected from 300 university students and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Smart Technologies were modelled by constructs like mobile technology, machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data analytics and cloud computing, while Smart Pedagogies included differentiated instruction, personalised learning, collaborative learning, distance learning and generative learning. The context of the study remains underexplored in previous smart education research. The results reveal that Smart Technologies significantly influence Smart Pedagogies and Student Learning. Smart Pedagogies had a strong positive impact on Student Learning and partially mediated the relationship between Smart Technologies and Student Learning. The findings highlight that technology investments alone are insufficient; their educational value is maximised when supported by appropriate pedagogical practices. This study contributes to smart education literature by empirically validating a mediated learning framework and offers practical implications for policymakers and university administrators in resource-constrained contexts.
