Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has fundamentally transformed the production, circulation, and consumption of political information, creating new opportunities for public engagement while simultaneously intensifying political polarization. Social media platforms, algorithmic content distribution, online political communities, and user-generated content have contributed to increasingly fragmented patterns of political discourse, making it important to examine how digital communication influences public opinion and political attitudes. This study investigates the relationship between digital media use, public opinion formation, and the transformation of political polarization in the contemporary digital age. A quantitative, survey-based research design was employed to examine perceptions of social media users regarding political information exposure, online political discussions, selective exposure, misinformation, and polarization. Data were collected from 300 respondents through a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis were employed to examine relationships among the study variables. The illustrative findings indicate that frequent exposure to politically oriented digital content is associated with stronger political opinion formation and greater perceived polarization. Selective exposure, algorithmically personalized content, and politically homogeneous online networks emerged as important factors associated with ideological fragmentation, while interactive digital communication also provided opportunities for political participation and access to diverse viewpoints. The study concludes that digital media has a dual influence on contemporary political discourse, simultaneously expanding civic engagement and reinforcing polarized communication environments. The findings highlight the importance of digital literacy, diverse information exposure, transparency in algorithmic systems, and responsible online political communication.
